Jakarta Proposes 9 Betawi Cultural Works to Be Registered as Communal Intellectual Property

The Jakarta Culture Agency has submitted the required documents related to 9 Betawi cultural works that will be registered as Communal Intellectual Property.

This is an effort by Regional Government to protect and preserve Betawi culture

Jakarta Culture Agency Head Iwan Henry Wardhana said the proposals had been through coordination and discussion with the Betawi Cultural Institute before being submitted to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regional Office on Wednesday (3/16).

"This is the Regional Government's effort to protect and preserve Betawi culture. This activity is also important because many people do not understand what Personal and Communal Intellectual Property is. While the law on ownership of intellectual works has a very important role in protecting intellectual property itself, both communal (owned by people or the general public) and personal (individuals) which can also affect the development of creative economy," he said, in Kuningan Timur, South Jakarta, as quoted from Jakarta PPID Press Release, Friday (3/18).

Furthermore, every Betawi cultural work that has been registered as Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTB) could continue to register its intellectual property right to the ministry.

Intellectual property protection is an important part of national development in the future and it has contributed significantly to national and international economic development.

Here are nine Betawi cultural works proposed to be registered as Communal Intellectual Property:

1. Gambus Betawi

2. Gerak Saka Martial Arts

3. Sekojor Martial Arts

4. Sabeni Tanabang Martial Arts

5. Sohibul Hikayat

6. Troktok Martial Arts

7. Pusaka Djakarta Martial Arts

8. Mustika Kwitang Martial Arts

9. Gamblong Martial Arts

For information, the Personal Intellectual Property is an intellectual property that is exclusive and individual, such as Copyright, Patent, Brand, Industrial Design, Trade Secret, Plant Variety, and Integrated Circuit Layout Design.

Meanwhile, the Communal Intellectual Property is an intellectual property whose ownership is group and is a traditional cultural heritage that needs to be preserved.

"Culture is the identity of a group or society whose ownership must be protected and preserved. Hopefully, by registering Betawi cultural works at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, more Betawi cultural works will receive recognition and protection from the competent authorities, which will be the pride of the Betawian people. Thus, together, we can maintain and preserve the culture," he stated.
